Kids&Science Matter Metals The Second Main Group - Alkaline-Earth Metals Magnesium |
|

MagnesiumIt is a silvery metal, which burns with a blinding white flame when heated above 500°C. Experiment:Potassium permanganate is crushed in a mortar and carefully blended with magnesium powder. Next, you pour it on a brick and light it. It instantly starts to burn and you will see a very bright white, blinding light.
Today, magnesium is used in fireworks and star shells.
Burning magnesium reaches temperatures of more than 2500°C. Magnesium fires cannot be extinguished with water!
Magic candles too, start to light again, because they contain magnesium and therefore don’t cool down so quickly after blowing out. We were only able to extinguish them because the whole group simultaneously blew out the candles 'on command'.
