Definition: Linear Function
We now describe the functions whose graphs are nonvertical lines. DEFINITION A linear function is a function f of the form f(x) = mx + b, where m and b are constants. The graph of a linear function is just the line with slope-intercept equation y = mx + b. This is the line through (0, b) with slope m. If two points on a line are known, the slope can be found as follows.
