This oblique view of Olympus Mons was taken by the Mars Global Surveyor wide angle camera in the morning of local winter. The caldera measures 66 x 83 km and the volcano is roughly 550 km from top to bottom of the image (east to west). The volcano rises some 25 km above the surrounding region. The clouds at the top of the image cover most of the plains east of the volcano and come up to the eastern edge of the edifice. The slopes of the volcano are very gentle, rising 2 to 5 degrees. The image is centered at approximately 18 N, 133 W, north is to the left and east is up. The color contrast has been enhanced to highlight features in the image. (Mars Global Surveyor, MRPS93714)
