Hydronium Ions

A hydronium ion (H3O+) is formed by the transfer of a proton (H+) from any molecule dissolved in water to a water molecule. Hydronium ions could also be formed by the transfer of protons from one water molecule to another (dissociation of water). At room temperature pure (distilled) water forms 10-7 mol/l hydronium (and hydroxide) ions. The number of hydronium ions in a liquid determines the pH value of the fluid.
