Example 1: Intermediate Value Theorem

The function

which is shown in Figure 3.8.8, is continuous for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. Moreover,

f(0)=l, f(1) = ½ - 3 = -2½.

The Intermediate Value Theorem shows that f(x) has a zero f(c) = 0 for some c between 0 and 1.
